Once upon a time I was a little girl who loved reading the back of Herbal Essence shampoo bottles and studying every word. Fast forward to being in college and interning at Josie Maran Cosmetics and getting the chance to meet the people writing the words on the back of shampoo (*argan oil) bottles.
I love the story that a beauty product can convey. I also love the newest innovation and the most wholesome ingredient. There feels to be a need to pick a side in beauty between natural or scientific. Good for your body or good results. Homestead or high rise.
When learning about tallow and all natural ingredients I’ve seen beef liver smoothies and things that are outside of my current comfort zone (but I’m sure are great for you?!). Tallow seems to live in the farmers market, homestead and wholly natural lifestyle.
On the other side of the spectrum I’ve been learning about biotech derived ingredients that are made in a lab to mimic naturals that are not able to be sourced sustainably (there simply isn’t enough of the ingredient available from a plant to make a product) but have amazing benefits. Naringenin has been on my radar (side note - anyone read the book Prindle in school about making up a brand new word? Having flashbacks to the pencil nomenclature). At first glance I assumed lab meant not “clean” (understanding that is a relative term in beauty), however then I came across EWG verified biotech products and am learning so much in the biotech space.
Tallow companies seem to profile themselves as all natural and anywhere but a lab. Often on a farm knee deep in the outdoors. Biotech companies seem to profile themselves as clinical and anywhere but a field. Often in a major city with a high rise view. I honestly enjoy time in both spaces. Can a brand thrive while embracing both sides? Let’s find out.
Ps here’s a pic of my current view - in the foothills of San Diego. Not quite high rise and not quite homestead;)
