Recently on a call a chemist said “one plus one does not equal two” in regards to a question I asked about how a sample smelled on my skin. Unscented tallow smells pleasant, rose oil smells fresh, but the two combined in our recent sample left a metallic finish on my skin that was not my favorite.
In college I majored in Applied and Computational Mathematics with a passion for the beauty industry growing deep at the time. I love a good simple math equation. In high school I excelled at math, but to be honest in college I was no where near as capable in math as many of my peers. However I loved being a math major and I learned so much outside of just math by being immersed in the culture of those classes. They were the polar opposite of the sorority house I went back to (not to say the girls weren’t smart, they were actually brilliant, but the environment was very different), and I loved living in the juxtaposition of the two.
Scents also have often settled differently on my skin than I’ve hoped. I vividly remember the infamous Pink Sugar perfume wafting through our sorority halls and getting sucked into wanting the cotton candy scent. My best friend and I were wandering through Sephora and I sprayed it on, I kid you not it reeked. I could not get the stench to wash off. I’m not sure I’ve ever typed the word reeked, but I know that was what we both said and no other word will suffice. How could it smell great on a classmate and smell rancid on my skin? I’m not sure if you’ve ever had the same experience, but if you have maybe we’ve got the same skin chemistry and maybe Otho will someday smell great on you too.
Here’s to a little math and a little chemistry and a little sorority all rolled up into one sweet smelling tallow body buttercream.
